Panel Methods and Their Applications to Sailboard Technology

Abstract

Windsurfers appeared in the leisure market during the past two decades and have now been established as one of the most popular water sports. Their design has been dominated by the qualitative feedback from the users of such craft. They have been able to achieve a speed record of about 40 knots at the perfect sailing conditions. It is believed that a more scientific approach in design, using CFD, will result in a craft capable of breaking this speed record.

Studying the flow over planing Windsurfer hulls and quantifying it in terms of fluid dynamics is the ultimate goal of this project. The main tool for the study of the flow is a panel method program. A Second-order Doublet Panel Method has been developed for this purpose. Practical uses for the program are wide ranging but involve tailoring to the specific application. Incorporating the relevant boundary conditions the program is capable of modelling inviscid, potential flow over any body. By studying the flow in this manner insight into the performance of planing Windsurfer hulls can be made. The second-order Doublet method is used in order to model the lifting effects of planing hulls. Second-order Doublet sheets can be used to model the wake and free surfaces, therefore utilizing a single set of formulae for all the calculations. All of the formulae are in terms of a global coordinate system, so no local systems for the panels are necessary resulting in lower running times. Pressure coefficients are calculated by the program, thus lift and pressure drag are calculated. All of the programs are written in C for a dedicated computer which is a 486 PC with an 1-860 board with 8 MB of RAM on board.
