Landsat 5/Thematic Mapper Images Used to Identify Macroalgae Vegetation in the Venice Lagoon

  • Chapter
Water Pollution: Modelling, Measuring and Prediction

Abstract

Conditions of eutrophication in the Venice Lagoon have caused an anomalous growth of macroalgae in the basin directly influenced by the inflow of pollutants and little tidal exchange. The interventions taken regard the depuration of industrial wastes and the automated collection of algae.

For years satellite images have been analyzed to study the lagoon, in this paper their data are used to investigate and compare a few models proposed to identify macroalgae with the final aim of making them useful. On one hand, the assumed hypotheses are analyzed for each model and on the other hand, the capability of the models to discriminate some situations typical of the lagoon.

In particular this paper is a synthesis in which the identification of one species of algae (Ulva rigida) is considered in relation to the spectral variance determined by phenological conditions.

Finally, verification will be made for each model of the existence of needed requirements for possible implementations to productivity and regional informational systems.
