Abstract
This paper will describe how a 3-dimensional advection-diffusion equation is solved using the results of sea trials spanning 5 years. Particular attention will be given to the processes of evaporation and solution where the critical parameters are the surface area of the slick and the mass transfer coefficients for evaporation and solution. A user-friendly random walk particle-tracking model is used to follow the motion of individual parcels of chemical to reproduce the observed spreading of chemicals on the surface of the sea and in the water column. In addition, experiments at sea in 1990 using slicks of sparingly soluble and volatile chemicals have provided new data which enables estimation of the mass transfer coefficients for solution and evaporation. These results obtained at sea will be compared with values obtained by theory, laboratory work, and work with dissolved gases at sea.
