Abstract

The hot-hardness test gives information about the time-dependant flow, or creep, of the material beneath the indenter. Analysis of this problem for self-similar indentation (that is, indentation by a pyramid or cone) lead to equations from which the creep exponent and activation energy can be derived, within limits imposed by the approximations of the method. The method is used to analyse hot-hardness data for metals and ceramics, drawn from a number of sources.
