Abstract
In this short introduction, we wish to allude to a few problems raised by interfaces in materials. The theoretical description of interfaces rests on a patchwork of representations with little in common and many dark areas in between. Their characterization is very difficult, more difficult than for surfaces. And almost nothing is known on the factors which control their ability to withstand ageing.
