Designing with Structural Ceramics

Abstract

Models that account for whisker toughening are compared and their consequences discussed in relation to possible composite design for toughness optimization. Sintering of composites with concurrent mechanisms of back stress development by rigid inclusions is analysed and explanations of slow sintering critically evaluated. Colloidal processing of nearly-random whisker composites is discussed with emphasis on the surface state of the particles and its influence on the packing of the green body.
