Abstract
The application of engineering ceramics to practical engineering applications is discussed. The more important properties of ceramics are summarised. Calculation methods for failure criteria are presented and the working method described here shows clearly that model calculations can be of great help in designing with advanced ceramics.
The application of finite element analysis and software has permitted redesign of the wear-sensitive wall-ironing ring as a viable ceramic component for the deep drawing of metal cans. The balancing of forces has led to a design free of tensile stresses.
