Abstract
Structural changes of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers during heat treatment under static conditions at 220℃ for 5 to 10 h were studied. The fiber mechanical properties were evaluated by breaking load and flexural strengh values.
The structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microsection method and ultrasonic analysis.
The intensity distribution record of X-radiation has revealed substantial differences between the samples investigated. The molecular orientation and dynamic viscous-elastic properties were determined by ultrasonic analysis.
By comparing the structural characteristics studied and mechanical behaviour of the PAN fiber, thermal stabilization parameters were optimized to facilitate the subsequent textile processing of the stabilized PAN fiber. Commercial production tests using the optimized process parameters yielded positive results.
