Interfaces in Metal/Ceramic Diffusion Bonds

  • Chapter

Abstract

Diffusion bonds of Pd/ZrO2 and Pd/Al2O3 made in vacuum at 1100°C 10 MPa have been studied. Their strengths measured by four-point bend tests show strong bonding occurred in the Pd/ZrO2 bands. Investigation of published phase diagrams suggested this to be due to an eutectic reaction between Pd and ZrO2. The existence of such a reaction was further characterised by optical and electron microscopy (TEM). Possible eutectic temperatures were found at 707 and 890° by differential thermal analysis (DTA).

TEM results of Pd/Al2O3 found no reaction layer between these two materials. This possibly explains the low strengths of these diffusion bonds.
