Abstract

The paper presents a strategy to optimize various non-coplanar laminate thin-walled structures. The optimization procedure is performed at two specially constructed levels for the purposes of minimization of the total weight and maximization of the globe stiffness of the structures. The FEM is used to obtain the structural response and a search algorithm is adopted to find the optimal ply thickness and ply orientation of each lamina. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed scheme.
