Summary

Immersed in solubility-consistent organic solvents, high polymers can swell and form gels. Choosing the organic solvent among metal extracting solvents, metal extracting gels can be prepared. The advantages of the liquid-gel extraction process, in comparison with the liquid-liquid one, are to allow the extraction of metal cations from diluted aqueous solutions by using high aqueous-organic volume ratios (metal concentration in a few stages) with easy phase separations.

Various CMPO* containing gels have been prepared, and the extraction of europium (and related actinides) has been studied. (* Octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide)
