On the Practical Significance of Crack Arrest

  • Chapter
Dynamic Failure of Materials

Abstract

In case crack initiation and propagation in a component or structure cannot be excluded, the safety against fracture depends on the arrest of the running crack. The practical significance of crack arrest will be demonstrated concerning ships, airplanes, pipelines, penstocks and mentioned for components of power plants. The measurement of the Crack Arrest Fracture Toughness KIa by testing three point bend specimens will be discussed. Tests and results concerning a fully killed weldable fine grain steel TStE 355 will be reported.
