Central and Peripheral Control of Dynamics in Finger Movements and Precision Grip

Abstract

The control of movement dynamics has been investigated in the precision grip. The task required the generation of fine-graded forces between thumb and index finger. EMG activity, recorded in human subjects and monkeys, have disclosed activation and modulation with force in almost all the finger muscles and shown the existence of muscular synergies between muscle-pairs. In the monkey, force-related neuronal activity was recorded in the motor and somatosensory cortex, thalamus and globus pallidus. These investigations have disclosed similar classes of discharge patterns in all 4 regions, however with some differences in their relative distribution, in their timing with respect to force increase and their relationship with force. Most similar to area 4 was the activity of a class of thalamic neurons, whereas the characteristics of the neurons in the somatosensory cortex seem to indicate that this region is mainly involved in a feedback loop from the periphery.
