Salivary gland scintigraphy with 99mTc-pertechnetate

  • Chapter
Diagnosis of salivary gland disorders

Abstract

In 1960, Richards (1) was the first to suggest that technetium-99m might have useful medical applications. Soon after that, the isotope was introduced for brain and thyroid scanning. The ability of the salivary glands to concentrate 99mTc-pertechnetate had been recognized since the early days of brain scanning. Yet this phenomenon was initially considered a nuisance because it interfered with a proper interpretation of the cerebral structures. However, it was soon realized that active concentration of pertechnetate by the salivary glands provided a welcome opportunity to investigate various diseases of these organs and the first article dedicated to salivary gland scintigraphy with 99mTc-pertechnetate was published by Borner et al. in 1965 (2). In the following years, a large number of publications on the subject appeared in the international literature. This flow indicated a lively interest in the new procedure at a time when, from a practical point of view, only plain radiography and sialography were available to evaluate salivary gland disorders.
