A durable question about infinitives is whether they are all syntactically sentential. In the GB literature (cf. Chomsky (1982), Koster and May (1982)), the question is standardly decided in favor of a sentential analysis for all verbal constructions. The extension of the projection principle requiring every VP to have an NP subject position effectively closes off the possibility of there being a VP anywhere other than inside an S. In GB, the purpose constructions that we have been considering receive CP analyses like those in (1)—(3).
