Abstract

Wh-operators in Iraqi Arabic (IA) have the option of appearing in the Comp node or in their base position (in-situ). Like English, the wh-operator appears in Comp and the questioned site is marked by a gap:

  1. (1)a.

    menoi Mona shaafa e i?

    Who Mona saw

    ‘Who did Mona see?’

  2. (1)b.

    weyya menoi Mona xarjat e i ?

    with whom Mona left?

    ‘With whom did Mona leave?’

Like Turkish (Hankamer 1975), Imbabura Quechua (Cole 1981), and Chinese (Huang 1982), wh-operators may optionally occur in their base position:

  1. (2)a.

    Monai shaafat menoi?

    Mona saw whom?

  2. (2)b.

    Mona xarjat weyya meno?

    Mona left with whom?

    ‘With whom did Mona leave?’

  3. (2)c.

memo ishtara sheno min ?ajl meno?

    who bought what for whom

    ‘Who bought what for whom?’
