Abstract
The gas and dust comprising the interstellar medium shows a marked tendency to exist in the form of discrete clouds. The typical dimension of a cloud is of the order of a few parsecs. Interstellar extinction and polarisation may be regarded as the net effect of several such clouds in the line of sight of a star.
