Conducting Langmuir-Blodgett Films of Mixture of Hexadecylbis(Ethylenedithio)—TTF and Hexadecyl-TCNQ

Abstract

Uniform conducting Langmuir-Blodgett films with stable properties are prepared when using binary mixtures of hexadecylbis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene and hexadecyl tetracyanoquinodimethane. Stabilization of conductivity value and its considerable increase occur after a short treatment of the sample in hexane. The conditions of high quality film deposition are determined. The films with various ratios of components are investigated by electron diffraction and electron microscopy techniques before and after treatment in hexane. The best films can be obtained when the ratio of acceptor and donor molecules in the mixture is approximately equal to 1:1.5. Two crystalline phases arise in the multilayer in this case. One phase is dissolved completely in hexane, and the second forms a continuous uniform film without the change of its crystalline structure. Temperature dependence of conductivity is measured. In a middle part of temperature range the conductance is realized through the activation mechanism. Some peculiarities of characteristics caused by irreversible change of conductivity under heating and by increase of the latter at low temperatures take place.
