Agglutinated Foraminifera from the Albian and Cenomanian of Jordan

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 327))

Abstract

A stratigraphic and paleoecologic analysis is made of agglutinated foraminifera in six wells and surface sections of the so-called “Cenomanian” of Jordan. The investigated species which belong to the genera Thomasinella, Haplophragmoides, Biconcava, Daxia, Mayncina, Ammotium, Flabellammina, Pterammina, Nezzazata, Charentia, Hemicyclammina, P seudocyclammina, Cuneolina, P seudolituonella, Simplorbitolina, and Orbitolina are briefly described or discussed. For the first time a Middle Albian age based on Simplorbitolina conula Schroeder can be established by foraminifera for part of the “Cenomanian” Naur Formation. The occurrence of complex agglutinated, warm and shallow water benthonic foraminifera indicates that sediments were deposited mostly under warm and shallow marine environmental conditions on the continental shelf. Oligospecific foraminiferal faunas mostly consisting of Hemicyclammina, Pseudocyclammina, and Haplophragmoides show somewhat restricted environments (at least) for sandy and marly intercalations, e.g. embayments or lagoons.
