Abstract
The philosophical literature on freedom of expression is marked by controversy over claimed bases for freedom of expression, and the exponents of various moral and political theories have devoted much effort toward fitting the justification of it as a right within their favored frameworks. One of the useful consequences of the stress on varying underlying bases for free expression has been that a number of philosophical foundations have been offered, all of which have some measure of plausibility.
