Abstract
“The foremost climatologist in the world” was the accolade bestowed upon Helmut Landsberg in April 1978 by delegates from 58 countries and ten international organizations at meetings in Geneva. As reported in the October issue of the WMO Bulletin, Landsberg was, at that time, retiring from the office of president of the Commission for Climatology of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). He had been elected to the office eight years earlier but his contributions to climatology and science in general, both outstanding and prolific, had of course commenced decades earlier. Nor did he fade away as he stepped down from his international office; his research and consultative activities continued resulting in more scientific papers and excellent advice appreciated by people in many, many countries around the world.
