Abstract
Epidemiological observation of cancer prevalence in various geographic areas and of its relationship with life style as well as with multiple additional parameters helped to outline risk factors for cancer development. Moreover, studies of migrants and studies on anatomopathological patterns of cancer and precancerous lesions have been very helpful to define the multistep progression from normal tissue to cancer. The epidemiological approach to anatomopathology and growing evidences about biological markers of precancerous conditions has brought new knowledge on this matter.
