Abstract

Laboratory, pot and field experiments were performed to study the behaviour of the chelates FeEDTA and FeEDHHA in calcareous soils. Total Fe, Fe extracted with 2,2’bipyridyl, ash alkalinity and yield were measured in the plant. Iron remaining in the soil following extracting with DPTA was determined.

Laboratory results showed an inverse relationship between Ca released from the soil and the Fe added. In a pot experiment, several quantities of both chelates were added to pots containing a calcareous soil. Grass (Lolium perenne L.) was used as an indicator plant. The treatments with highest amounts of Fe added as FeEDDHA were significantly higher than those with the lowest quantities added as FeEDTA and the control in total Fe, Fe Bipyridyl and Fe extracted with 1M HCl. In a field experiment we only found differences at 90% of probability in chlorophyll b in the second sampling.
