Abstract
Land use patterns in The Netherlands have followed particularly distinctive trends. These trends can only be clarified by an analysis of social changes. This understanding of historical changes is important for predicting future land use patterns. The management of present land use activities and the planning of future land use patterns must be based on ecological sustainability: to preserve natural resources for future generations, it is imperative that they are used in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
