Abstract

In this chapter we shall present the approach suggested by Pirogov and Sinai for the problem of phase transitions. This approach extends Peierls’s idea that what is determinative for a configuration is its contours (see section 7). We deal here with the case of a finite fiber. For a more complete treatment of this theory, Sinai’s book [179] may be consulted. In addition, a comparison of the method of perturbed Hamiltonians that is described here and methods based on positive reflexivity (see chapter 7) may be found in [68]
