Phase Transition 2: Phase Diagrams and Perturbed Hamiltonians

In this chapter we shall present the approach suggested by Pirogov and Sinai for the problem of phase transitions. This approach extends Peierls’s idea that what is determinative for a configuration is its contours (see section 7). We deal here with the case of a finite fiber. For a more complete treatment of this theory, Sinai’s book  may be consulted. In addition, a comparison of the method of perturbed Hamiltonians that is described here and methods based on positive reflexivity (see chapter 7) may be found in
