Abstract

Since the archive of data obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite is the first modern astronomical data archive it is of interest to follow its development. It is also the first heavily used archive of astronomical data. The IUE Archive has been from the beginning a distributed archive with three major archival sites, each one hosting a complete copy of the IUE Archive Data. Comparison of these allows one to evaluate how different design philosophies have affected the organization of the archive access and support. Over the past 12 years the linking of computers through networks has had a major impact, not only on the methods used for the maintenance of the IUE Archive itself, but also on its usage and accessibility.
