Abstract
The Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC) was initiated by the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO) to provide access to the HST data archives for Canadian scientists and to promote involvement in space astronomy research. A secondary goal is to provide a small centre of expertise in astronomical computing within the Canadian community. These goals were identified by the Canadian Astronomical Society and its subcommittee on Space Astronomy in 1984. Canada is not a partner in the HST mission, nevertheless NASA has agreed to provide the CADC with a copy of the non-proprietary data. CADC must pay for the incremental costs of producing the copy, which are a tiny fraction of the actual costs of the HST mission. These costs are being reimbursed by the Canadian Space Agency.
