Abstract

Polymer electrolytes are ionically conductive, solid solutions of ionic compounds in a polymeric matrix, such as lithium Perchlorate dissolved in linear poly-ethylene oxide, PEO or variants such as the cross-linked “network PEO”. This article describes two recent developments in polymer electrolytes: their use (a) with miniaturized electrodes (“microelectrodes”), and (b) as rigid or semi-rigid solvents to study the solid solution voltammetry of (ionic or non-ionic) molecular metal complex electron donors and acceptors. Progress in adapting electroanalytical methods (cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and AC voltammetry) to solid state voltammetry is outlined, as are recent examples of chemical and transport studies.
