Abstract

In vitro culture of the tissues of most higher plants has been accomplished successfully, and in almost all species it has been found possible to regenerate whole, free-living plants. The technique has been in commercial use for twenty five years, becoming an established, almost conventional system for plant propagation alongside seed germination and the various methods of vegative propagation. Its value for the very rapid production of large numbers of healthy starter plants is well recognised.
