Abstract
Tissue culture techniques have opened many new possibilities of crop improvement, since responses at cell level are well defined under controlled conditions. Recent biotechnological developments have enabled investigators to produce trans-genic plants that are tolerant of herbicides, insects and resistance to viral infection (Gasser and Fraley, 1989). Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a soil borne bacterium that causes crown gall disease in a wide range of dicotyledonous plants, has been most widely used as a vehicle for gene transfer into plants. The transferred genes are stably integrated into the genomes of the transgenic plants and are transmitted to their progengy as Mendelian factors (DeBlock et al., 1984).
