Abstract
Water, temperature and oxygen are factors that most influence seed ageing. Ageing involves changes in macromolecules - nucleic acids, proteins and lipids (Priestley, 1986), the extent of which may determine the vigour and viability of a seed lot. The presently recommended and practiced germplasm conservation of desiccation tolerant (orthodox) seeds for long term requires drying of seeds to low moisture (ca < 5%) and storage at low temperature (<-18°C) which make the method very expensive (International Board for Plant Genetic Resources, IBPGR, 1985). At any given temperature the lower the seed moisture the greater is the longevity down to species specific low moisture content limit to logarithmic relationship between seed moisture content and longevity (Ellis et al., 1989).
