Abstract

Philosophy has always had to search for answers to a few basic questions of world view: (1) the question of the origin, nature, and evolution of the world; (2) the source of knowledge (“what can I know?”); (3) the meaning of life (“what shall I do? what may I hope?”); (4) the place of humans in the world (“what are humans?”); (5) the character of social progress. Now questions two through four have a long tradition, intimated at least by referring to Kant’s famous questions about metaphysics, morality, religion, and anthropology. By contrast, the first and the last questions can only be raised in a meaningful way within the framework of dialectical materialist or historical materialist thought.
