Abstract

Ischaemic stroke is a primarily vascular disorder for which no uniformly successful treatment exists. The socioeconomic consequences of this disorder with the clinical approaches currently available are staggering in the negative: it is the second most common vascular cause of death in North America, and the third leading cause of death and disability in the Northern Hemisphere (Report of the Atherosclerosis Task Force, 1982; Mackay and Nias, 1979).

This research was supported in part by grant 1-R01-NS26945 from the National Institutes of Health. This is publication No. 6193-MEM from the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, California
