Abstract
The last few years has brought a growing recognition of and concern about the large-scale environmental problems caused by the massive use of fossil fuels. International problems with acid rain have been brought up to high political levels on a number of occasions (Norway vs the UK, Canada vs the USA). Popular articles, conferences, commissions and committees addressing the greenhouse problem have flourished. The discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole, the probable verification of global warming, damage such as dead forests in the wake of acid rain, the continuous effort of serious environmental pressure groups and the adoption of environmental problems high on the agenda of the UN (cf. The World Commission on the Environment and Development, 1987) have all played an important part in enhancing awareness of threatening environmental problems.
