Abstract
Compared with the rest of Europe, England and Wales have an unusually high proportion of houses with private gardens, e.g. England and Wales, 78%, Belgium, 70%, Holland, 56%, West Germany, 49%, France, 32% (Evenson, 1979). Provision in Scotland is much lower than in England and Wales as there the housing contains a higher proportion of tenements and flats without private gardens. Though exact data are hard to come by, it is thought that in Britain there are over 15 million gardens which in England and Wales cover 400000 ha or 3% of the land surface. In towns residential areas may extend over 60–70% of the total built-up area.
