Abstract

In his review on onchocerciasis published in 1970 in Advances in Parasitology George Nelson wrote: ‘Throughout the world. .. no more than a dozen scientists are devoted to the study and control of this disease. The present review is not designed for this small group of experts; its aim is to bring onchocerciasis to the attention of biologists, clinicians and public health workers in order to stimulate interest in a fascinating but formidable problem’. Four years later, I was one of the biologists whom he introduced to this ‘formidable problem’, and in the 20 years since he wrote these lines ‘river blindness’ has risen from obscurity to join the ranks of the most widely recognized of tropical diseases.
