Development, testing, and use of the Sickness Impact Profile

Quality of Life Assessment: Key Issues in the 1990s

Abstract

The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) is a behaviourally based measure of health-related dysfunction. In its final version it consists of 136 items grouped into 12 categories. Three of the categories can be aggregated into a physical dimension; four others inta a psychosocial dimension. The remaining five categories cannot be aggregated into a coherent and consistent dimension. A percentage score may be obtained for the entire measure, each of the 12 categories, and the two dimensions. (See Table 4.1 for samples of SIP items grouped by category and dimension.)

Most portions of this paper have been reported in Refs 3 and 5.
