Abstract

Medical treatment of chronic conditions is directed at both the alleviation of symptoms and, if possible, the prolongation of life. As cure is often not possible, the goals of therapy are also to limit the complications of the disease process both medical and symptomatic so that life may be comfortable, functional and satisfying13. This is an important concept, since prolongation of life may lead to an inadequate quality of life, in which case lengthened life may not be an acceptable endpoint of therapy for the patient or for their closest relatives, friends and supporters. This is one of the reasons why there is a growing interest in the definition, measurement and documentation of life’s qualities.
