Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is a prototypical chronic disease, as its impacts are largely functional and rarely fatal. Because cure or death are rare outcomes, rheumatologists have entirely sought alternative measures of therapeutic response, and have recently devised several arthritis-specific measures of health status. The purpose of this chapter is to review the pressures for improving health status assessment in arthritis, to examine whether newer instruments offer an advantage over older ones, and to review the performance of several recently devised scales. Finally, the particular problem of measuring changes over time, as in the typical design of a therapeutic trial, will be considered.
