Abstract
For a fee, investment companies provide investment management and bookkeeping services to investors. These services are popular with those who do not have the time or expertise to manage their own portfolios. Over the last seventy years investment companies burgeoned; today, their activities are primarily regulated by the Investment Company Act of 1940 and by the 1950 amendments to the act. The major provisions of that act are summarized below.
