In this chapter, we turn our attention to the history of English. As in , our concern is primarily with the history of inversion and interrogative constructions as it is manifested in the development of the Modern English auxiliary system. Since the auxiliary system is the central issue, we will also be concerned with a topic that did not arise in our discussion of French: the lexico-semantic characterization of auxiliaries.
