Abstract
The central topic of this chapter is the development of interrogative and inversion constructions in the history of French. The basic fact that we are concerned with was alluded to in 1.2.: in Modern French (henceforth ModFr), i.e. French texts from the 16th century on (see 2.4. for more precise dates), inversion around a non-pronominal subject is impossible.
