Abstract
So far, attention has been focussed on the role of all forms of water movement on the ecology of fresh waters. Some features of aquatic habitats and the way these influence the growth of plants and animals have been examined in isolation. In addition, because few river basins are in a pristine state, the changes resulting from man’s activity have been reviewed. What has to be considered now is how to link these separate elements together, not only to improve our understanding of freshwater ecology but also as a contribution to the management of river basins.
