Abstract
The object here is to provide a partially quantitative description of river morphology as a step towards understanding the nature of river habitats. In particular, it is hoped to demonstrate that there is a more consistent pattern in the structure of rivers than is sometimes imagined and that the view of some biologists that every river is different is not justified. Why rivers have certain characteristics is not considered.
