Abstract
The development of steadily larger concerns of an environmental nature in the atmospheric sciences is described. The environmental edge in meteorology has become more and more important due to developments which have taken place over the last half century or so. A great variety of environmental problems have appeared in a number of areas, and it will be impossible to cover them in a single short paper. The present paper will, therefore, concentrate on problems related to climate and climate change, and within this general area, on the greenhouse effects.
A comparison will be made between the results of model studies and studies of the available climatological data with the major conclusion that, so far it has not been possible to create a direct link between the steadily increasing concentration of the greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, and the observed changes of temperature at the surface of the Earth. On the other hand, data from the upper atmosphere seems to indicate that the greenhouse gases may have had an effect on the temperatures above the major cloud layers and especially in the lower stratosphere.
