Abstract
Successful expression of neurotransmitter receptors in heterologous systems in vitro requires that the host cell can synthesise adequate amounts of correctly processed and targeted protein. To date the most popular expression systems for receptors have been the injection of DNA or mRNA into Xenopus oocytes,1,2 or the use of vectors to transform Escherichia coli,3 yeast4 or mammalian cells, e. g. fibroblasts.5,6 One of the main disadvantages of these systems is that often only very small quantities of protein are synthesised, and in the case of E. coli, the proteins are often not correctly processed to allow functional analyses.
