Abstract

The response of particulate matter to shock treatment has been under investigation for several decades, but usually in connection with metallic powder compaction. It is only in the last 20 years or so that the interest in the changes effected by the passage of a shock wave through nonmetallic powder materials ceased to be purely academic. Practical, industrial considerations have given sufficient impetus to research and development into the shock treatment of powders to produce a considerable volume of literature in the area of, naturally, metallic powders, and then of ceramics, and to extend the work, more recently, to polymers and polymeric mixtures and blends.
