Abstract
Ceramic portliners in the cylinder head of an engine reduce the cooling efforts, improve the response behaviour of the catalyst and increase the degree of efficiency of the turbocharger. Because of the brittleness of the material the design of this component has to be adjusted to the ceramic materials properties in order to enable casting around with liquid metal. The manufacturing process has to be designed in a way that at a low production cost level the extremely tight dimensional tolerances demanded for ceramic parts in automotive constructions can be met reproducably. Using the slip casting process as an example the process steps design, mould preparation, powder processing, shaping, sintering and finishing will be explained and the quality control and quality assurance concepts necessary for mass production will be discussed.
