Abstract
New mixed-phase α′/β′ Sialon ceramics have been fabricated by transient liquid-phase sintering resulting in minor glass residues. The glass has been completely devitrified to YAG because of the receptiveness of the combined α′ and β′ phases in accommodating non stoichiometric components. The resulting ceramics have distinctive microstructures of isolated, non-faceted, YAG in an α′/β′ phase mixture, typically in 70/30 ratio.
Hardness, oxidation and creep-resistance for these ceramics are superior to those of earlier β′ Sialons.
