Abstract

A new concept for solid-state bonding between ceramics was developed. An interlayer, which forms as a result of the ceramic-metal eutectic works as a bonding agent.

It has been found that the (Al,Cr)2O3-Cr eutectic gives possibility to obtain an excellent solid-state join between ceramic elements with the bend strength over 200 MPa for pressureless sintering.

On the way of controlled phase transformation the interlayer eutectic can be obtained as a fully oxide phase. As a result of phase transformation the melt temperature of the interlayer increases up to that of bonded materials; however formation of the join takes place at much lower temperature.
